Available Mon - Sat, starting at 11h30, ending and 13h30.
Option 2: Cape Malay Cooking Safari (half day guided tour)
R660pp (excluding transfers)
Includes: guided walking tour of historical heart of the Bo-Kaap with accredited tour guide, entrance fee Bo-Kaap Museum, cooking workshop and demonstration, full course traditional meal & small gift, transfers if indicated.
Perched on the slopes of Signal Hill, overlooking Table Bay, the Bo-Kaap is as idiosyncratically ‘Cape’ as the spicy scents and flavours that waft downhill from its eccentrically colourful cobbled streets.
Our walk through the historic Malay quarter of Cape Town takes us through its nooks and crannies, its legends and secrets, as we hunt for the sources of those wonderful aromas and discover the distinctive cuisine of the Cape Malay community.
The adventure begins at the Bo-Kaap Museum, where an intimate group of no more than ten people will meet to enjoy the photo exhibition, and get a feel for the history and tradition of the area. Your guide will lead you on a leisurely stroll through some of the more historic streets, giving you a chance to appreciate the extraordinary collection of pre-1840 architecture that resulted in this area being declared a national monument.
Then its time to follow our noses towards the scents of ginger, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, and chilli which drift tantalisingly from the storefronts and cafés, as we shop for ingredients to make a typical Cape Malay dish.
It’s “hands-on” during the informal cooking workshop which follows in a Bo-Kaap family home. We learn how to mix Masala, fold Samoosas, and how to balance the delicate flavours of a Cape Malay curry.
Over a mug of faloodah (a traditional, lightly rose-scented milk drink) our hostess and cooking instructor will tell you more about the ways in which food, history and religion are interwoven in the Bo-Kaap culture.
Then it’s time to sit back, relax, and appreciate your handwork as you dig in to a full course traditional Malay Meal.

When you are going to experience something ‘life-changing’ like this then you need to do it properly and with the experts! Dyer Island Cruises offer Five Star Boat Based Whale Watching. “This 2½ to 3-hour journey takes us to Dyer Island and the adjacent coast. We frequently see Dolphins along the beach. Southern right whales come to the shallow water during their breeding season. Sightings are guaranteed from Jun to Dec. Our permit allows us to approach to within 50 metres, but curious whales often swim right up to the boat to look at us. At Dyer Island we look for interesting sea birds such as African Penguins, Terns, Cormorants, Petrels and Oystercatchers. A narrow channel known as Shark Alley separates Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, home to a colony of 60 000 cape fur seals. A full day tour for the compassionate wine tourist who wants to experience more than just the fabulous wines of South Africa.
This tour introduces you to The Pebbles Project, a registered non-profit organisation that supports children living in the Winelands. Visit three wine farms and taste their delicious wines, but also spend quality time visiting the crèches and after-school clubs on each farm, and get involved with a range of fun activities with the children.
The Pebbles Project works with farm owners to develop their farm worker communities, focusing particularly on the education of the children. Services include: training for crèche and after-school club staff, supplying of all the educational resources and equipment, and taking the children out every month on an educational trip to local places of interest. Pebbles also offers workshops and support for parents living and working on the farms.
The Wine Desk actively supports The Pebbles Project and as with their other specialised wine tours, endeavours to offer the wine tourist the 'off-the-beaten-track' experience. Apart from tasting wines at the tasting rooms, the Wine Desk introduces visitors to the people behind the scenes - the winemaker, the cellar and vineyard workers, their families and children. Every attempt is also made to make the tour as personalised for each wine tourist as possible, taking into account 'who they are'.
